im about to buy myself a ipod, but dont want to pay a buck for each song off itunes. i have a mp3 player with alot of songs on it. me and a friend were talking, and she sayed that i will not be able to transfer my songs from my mp3 to my ipod because the ipod will think it is illegal. is this true?

True. You can put any mp3s on there, doesn't have to be off iTunes.

You can also share your music with your friends using Anapod (payware) or YamiPod (excellent freeware). They allow you to copy your iPod MP3s straight off your iPod to a computer without iTunes getting in the way.
So if you're visiting a friend and they like a song on your iPod, just install YamiPod on their PC and copy the song.

There is software out there (myfairtunes) that will strip the DRM protection from your songs in iTunes, and convert them to MP3. In addition I have some iTunes download vouchers I am not using and you are welcome to 'em
