help with htaccess for wildcard subdomains

i have wildcard subdomains set up and would like to be able to do something like this if possible:

product.site.com

would show same as

site.com/query.php?item=product

any help would be appreciated

Well u have too add a dns record aswell as u will need to have access to apache config file..
