Help With .HTACCESS File Problem And Permalinks

I need some help with something I'm really stumped on. I've checked out the WP Codex and can't seem to find a clear answer there, either.

I'm trying to change my permalinks from the default on my new WP blog. I know how to do it in the dashboard, but when I do it tells me that my .htaccess file isn't writable, so it can't be done.

Upon looking for my .htaccess file, I noticed that there wasn't one. I looked at the WP Codex and learned how to create one. The only problem is that caused an "internal server error" so I had to delete it. Maybe I have one and can't find it? I just don't know. Can anyone who has some experience with this please point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Who are you hosting with? I've hosted with hostica before and had the same problem (they are horrible). Go daddy and the other major companies don't seem to have this problem.

You should change hosts. If you are just starting up a blog, try using a free host. But, if you are planning on making it big quick, try to get a cheap host and then upgrade as it progresses. You shouldn't really have any problems with .htaccess
That's all I can really suggest.

I am using 000Webhost.com. They are free but I have their premium service. I've tried everything, I've followed all of the instruction in the codex. I created and inserted the .htaccess file in my main directory. I chmodded it to 666. Still, I can't change the permalinks. They only work on default. Whenever I install a .htaccess file I get "internal server error". What do I do? Help, please!

You need to try change it to 755 or 777.I would recommend to get a proper hosting.

They are proper hosting. They support .htaccess files. Also, Wordpress says not to chmod the file to anything above 666. Besides, I already tried chmoffing it to 777 and it makes no difference. I'm totally stumped!
