    Hi there !

Despite being a good self certified writer - and 'web master' I am a crappy wordpress gal. I basically have a site that was doing quite well but was overwhelmed with comments. I always set up my own blogs and manage them alone.. today when i was moderating some comments I was met with the below error , and haven't been able to get into my site since.

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request

Godaddy have advised me to do the following - but.. I haven't clue what it all means, it may as well be in another language.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

    Apache/1.3.33 Server at mydomain.com Port 80

    Cause:

This error can be caused by a variety of issues but is most likely caused by a corrupt .htaccess file. Check to see if there is an .htaccess file in the directory where the error is being generated or any directory above in the tree. If so, temporarily rename the .htaccess file and refresh the page. If the error does not reappear, the .htaccess file is the issue. Repair the file or leave it disabled.

Most of the time .htaccess issues are caused by trying to overwrite PHP settings, being uploaded in binary format or permissions issues.

    Resolution:

Be sure to upload .htaccess files in ASCII mode

Set the permissions to 644, which makes it useable by the server, but prevents it from being read from a browser.

If you are trying to make changes to PHP settings, be sure to make said changes to the php.ini or php5.ini file (depending on the version you are using).

For more information see How do I view my CGI error logs.

If any one is able to help please let me know!!!

    My site is -

They are your host company and the error is on the server. I'd also call them and try to get them to fix the problem. That's what their customer support is there for. At least that's what it's there for with most companies.

thank you ! well , yes I'd have thought that they could help too - but it seems that I am the one that has to. I mailed them back but not heard anything yet. I didn;t call as it's too expensive really , every time i call the us from the UK i get put on hold or wind up with a rather large bill ! I once had a paypal issue and wound up with a very high bill having to call them back multiple times and be put on hold !!!

In your GoDaddy control panel you should have something called File Manager (or file browser, or something along those lines). The .htaccess file is in the directory where you installed WordPress and you should be able to rename it from there.

When you click on the file manager, you might need to tick an option called "show hidden files" or "show dotfiles" or similar, to get the .htaccess to show up.

Thank you I have managed to find that section now - but totally unsure how to rename it or what to rename it to. I'm more scared of making a bigger problem than this! ! It's so annoying.

If it's anything like my file manager, you need to click on the file you want to interact with to highlight it then choose the "rename" option along the top of the page, but it could be totally different in yours

I'd just rename it to .htaccess2 or something, if it makes the site even worse (somehow) you can just change it back since almost nothing you can ever do will affect your cpanel. Be brave!
