You will need to register the domain with a registrar. you can do a google search and choose one or use bluehost godaddy or 1and1 just to name a few. these three are all different prices and offer different packages. You will then need to buy web hosting space (preferable from the same company). If you buy a package you will get a domain and web space.

Once you get that you can post here for the forum help.

You might want to try Dreamhost for your needs since you don't sound too experienced and they offer domain registration plus hosting all for reasonable prices (you can even find a coupon on this forum with a search). Then they also have a thing called "one click Ínstant Installs" or something like that where you can install the php forum (only version 2) from just one click (in theory)

    Cool, thank you both.

Anyone have any good suggestions of a domain buying and hosting to start with?

I suggest active-domain.com. You can register one for as low as $2.85, even with a unverified Paypal account. You can then use free web hosting services like x10hosting or 000webhost.com, to host your site, by changing nameservers.

That's it. Your website for as low as $2.85!

Be patient, though as the whole process takes time.

The free ones are often worth what you pay for them.

Sometimes handled by individuals, typically poor and reliable. Your content can go missing or dissapear the next day. You find a good one and after a while the quality goes downhill when people find out it's a good one.

if you want to get an idea at no expense then you can register free domains at no-ip.com.. but the free hosting search might be a bad experience.
