This is the best category I believe for my question. I have found about five threads total on this forum about hotelscombined.com. I have an affiliation with them and am doing a private branding where I need to set up a cname which redirects my site to their server, but it still looks like my site. As they host everything, there is no hosting cost, so I'm just using a cheap free hosting account from godaddy, the owner of my domain. It basically works like this: I set up the cname to point to hotelscombined.com, and they have it set up so when they see the cname coming from my site, are able to show the private brand I have set up with them, and all the while the user still seems my domain name and it looks like my site still. The problem is I have set up the cname with godaddy like they told me to on the phone after I had trouble: Host (Alias) = www points to = www.hotelscombined.com So I set that up and waited well over 48 hours like they said is the max time to wait for DNS actions to take effect and then I try to type my domain and get nothing. It's just a coming soon page that says the page has not been uploaded yet. I know nobody may be able to give me an answer because this is a specific problem but while I am working with both of the parties external to me in this issue I wondered if anyone here had perhaps ever set up a cname with godaddy period, or even a long shot that someone had set up a cname for the exact same reason as me. Thanks for your time.
i had the same problem with htelcombined cname record with godaddy after 2 months waiting the url still not redirect to the hotelcombined thou
Thanks for the replies. Alinaseductive, if you view this topic again, can you tell me if you tried using a different host? Two months is waiting too long. I've been waiting for a week but have been on the phone with host and hotelscombined.com trying to work this out. I know others have done it because I've seen the proof, so I know it's possible. I feel it's a problem with the host making it difficult and complicated to do the cname. They keep telling me just do an A record over and over. But when I ask, can I do a cname? They respond I can do either or. Seems they know that something is wrong with their cname setup. I just have free hosting with them as this does not require paying for hosting but if I could not ever do a cname with them I would consider buying hosting from someone else for a few bucks a month. I always try to discuss with godaddy but they always seem to be just not quite answering the right question. Saying they don't do custom DNS settings, etc. etc. I'm not asking for custom, just tell me if the cname is done correctly? It shouldn't be so difficult to answer a direct question. Well, I will keep you updated if anyone is looking here.
I just found something online that suggested it's best to do both a CNAME and an A record with godaddy hosting to make sure everything is fine. I thought it would be redundant, but, although this is for a different case I think it works for mine in case anyone is interested. http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/GoDaddy+CNAME+Setup copy and paste as I'm not "allowed" to have links yet on this forum
