Hi Google Gurus: I have a question: can using a subdomain url help with Google ranking for a specifc keyword, with that keyword being part of the subdomin name? Here is the example that has me intrigued: http://rimage.cd-lab.com If you put Google search the keyword "rimage", this subdomain url comes up #2. I really do not see any requisite SEO on this url to cause it to come up so high. Has a PR of 3, nothing special in backlinks... so again I have to ask: does having a subdomain with a keyword in it help with google ranking? Also, I noticed that you are immediately taken to the main domain from this subdomain when clicking on a link, ie you go from http://rimage.cd-lab.com to www.cd-lab.com. Is this part of an SEO technique...using a gateway page through subdomain? Also, I could not find if there was actually an html default page associated with this subdomain.. ie index.* or default.* So this mysteriously highly ranked subdomain page has me even more puzzled. Any feedback regarding this would be most appreciated. CJ
yes. Keywords in the subdomain, or anywhere in the URL, will help with ranking better for that keyword.
Thanks for the prompt response Bilz. So in and of by itself, doing this technique can give you good ranking? I am still perplexed as to how this is done exactly in the example I refer too, because I cannot find a page assocated with this subdomain url. Anyone else have any feedback on this? CJ
It seems they have done the same for the other Manufactures as well... ie.. mitsui.cd-lab.com, etc, etc. So basically rimage.cd-lab.com is the same page as going to cd-lab.com/cdlab2005/viewLabel.php?id=14 Although notice they have more PR for the subdomain...
Hey Big: Interesting. Do you understand what the technique that is used to have a page rerouted based on the subdomain manufacturer name, as you so adroitely pointed out? Is it a php script or some sort of redirect? I really would like to implement this technique somehow to see if it would help with ranking. Thanks for your help!!!
Yea, this is probably just a redirect using mod_rewrite. Check out this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=23044&highlight=mod_rewrite
Hey BD: Thanks for the info. I found the following bit regarding the mod_rewrite link you posted: -------------------------- Can I rewrite a sub-domain to a directory? Yes. Here's the code xxxxx.domain.com to www.domain.com/XXXXXX/ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^[www\.]*xxxxx.domain-name.com [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URL} !^/XXXXX/.* RewriteRule ^(.*) /XXXXX/$1 [L] --------------------------- Since the subdomain web site I mentioned seems to work on a redirect technique, I wonder how Google attributes any ranking to the keyword embedded in the subdomain? Is is just the subdomain url itself... rimage.cd-lab.com... that is crawled by Google and is given high ranking for the "rimage" keyword? Can a subdomain, wihch is nothing but a redirect script, have other attributes that Google recgonizes...hidden content pages, backlinks? Thanks again for your invaluable feedback. CJ
