    Hi,

I have inherited a the task of managing a VPS hosting account. I have to set up a subdomain on the server running Debian and apache. The subdomain will also need FTP access I believe the server is running bind9. Does anyone know how I can do this or a good tutorial that could get me up to speed fast?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Tony

just set up a new separate individual vhost using the subdomain, then make a CNAME entry from your DNS settings of your domain host panel - are you using any type of control panel or are you attempting to do it via SSH?

Thanks for the help guys, I have to do it through SSH.

I've set up a virtual host by editing apache's config file before. I'm fairly confident about that, it's setting up the ftp and the dns, which I believe is bind and any other things I need to do which I may be unaware of at this point that I could really use some assistance with.

It's on a live production server that hosts the companies main site so I'd realy like to know what I'm doing before I start tinkering and take them offline completely!

Thanks again for the reply any further help would be greatly apreciated.
    cheers,

    Tony

If it is your server you should think about installing SysCP (it is for free).

    For Debian it is
    apt-get install syscp
    Code (markup):
Ok, let's see what we can do with SSH ;-)

I just assume it is Debian, so you just change to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and you should see some files like 00-default, 10_...

Please let me know the files you see.

Thanks for your reply, I was told it was a debian install but after checking with uname -a command it would appear that it is Cent OS 5.2.

I have checked the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf but there is no sign of any virtual hosts in the main config file.

Sorry for the total lack of knowledge all of my limited experience of Linux is with Debian.

Hope you can help me out with this.

    Many thanks,

    Tony

Thanks for your help, unfortunately after much research I have realised that my original post is not an accurate description of my problem. I have started a new thread as it is barely related. But thanks again for your efforts.

The link you posted for setting up virtual hosts in apache is a good one.

Again thanks for your time, it is much appreciated.
