Hi all, I planned to 're-enter' the IT scene after being absent from it for 3 long years. I have a degree in Computer Science and really do enjoy Programming. Well, now I'd like to apply for programmer or IT related jobs but I don't know if my skills alone are enough to secure a good job. So, I want to upgrade myself and learn more skills to sell my CV. I only know C, Java, ASP, VB, Ajax (little), Coldfusion, SQL, Access... to name a few. I am considering PHP, .NET, C# and maybe to re-learn Ajax. What skills do you guys think I should have? Also, what portfolio should I have with me to go for Interviews? Thanks in advance!!!
It depends what you want to go into. 90% of windows jobs that I see are all ASP.NET [C# or VB.NET] The rest are C# for windows, C++ and PHP jobs. I'd suggest learning C# and ASP.NET as you cover more bases then and its a massive market.
Honestly, diversify yourself a bit. Get comfortable with Linux-based systems, especially Red Hat Enterprise (or CentOS...) and Debian. Get acquainted with Perl. I left Windows programming years ago for Linux/UNIX development and administration, and have made far more money than I ever made at Microsoft shops. I still support some Windows server systems, but they're not the bulk of my work.
