Help on one of my free directories - too many submission

Discussion in 'Directories' started by xc06, Feb 5, 2007.

I own a free PR 4 directory using 3.06 phpld.

It gets tons of submission and most of them are spam or low quality sites.

    Pending Links 7033

I don't have time to review the list and it really makes me headache.

How can I easily clear all of pending links? Is it good to do it?
    any mysql command?

    Pls help!

If you release, you will get a loot of SPAM sites listed.
The best is to charge at least $1, your submissions will drop to ~10 a day.
    cheers

thanks a lot for suggestion. green rep sent to you.

I would like to keep a free directory for myself.
3.10 phpld could be one option. First thing I want to do is to clear the pending links.

With 3.1 you get less bot submissions, but the same human SPAM.

I had the same problem; Things have been lot better after I began allowing submissions with reciprocals only.

reciprocal can also be a prob. some reciprocal pages even not linked to the homepage and never picked up by SE.

There are a lot of ways to do it. I don't agree totally with ASK because if you up it to a buck or any amount you lose the traffic from free lists/etc.

On my free website directory I implemented where they have to write a longer description which not only lowered spam dramatically, but made for a content rich environment that makes it stand out. Like this education category for instance.

You can also make it so they have to have an account. That should also shut it down. I think if you just make it a little harder to submit and ask for more content you'll be OK.

I think the best option sis to charge for regular listings and give the reciprocal option for free

A longer description also looks like a good plan.

Get some volunteers to help you approve them. You should be able to catch it up in a few days. Close down the submission for now. Ask for volunteers. I know a directory I used in the past had closed down for a while, but it is back open now for accepting.

I agree also to close down for a while. You might want to consider to change your free dir to paid since you have PR4 now. Establishing a good guideline page or statement on submit page works too.

Agreed with !Ask! that if you charge a few bucks or a buck the freebies will stop submitting and you can do whatever you need to do.

I have 23 directories and there is no way i could even do 1 free directory as the traffic as well submittions would be to much for me to handle so paid is my only option.

    thx

You have a captcha enabled right? This would stop the Auto-Posting bots and Scripts I believe.

No it depends on who it is as thier are now 2 spammers running around
and both can get in if they so choose with out anty problem.

An0n offers a Spam Blocker witch protects the contact us page as well as incoming submittions to ensure no spam gets in.

    thx

I will do some thing below,

Searching .blogspot, delete most, searching "loan", delete a lot, searching student, delete...

Then you'll find 2/5 pending link deleted.

Free directories are a headache. Charge a small fee for a listing, and keep the recips free, although there are bots that spam with recips.

If you just want to clear all of your pending now, just go into the Admin panel and change it so it displays like 250 links, and then you can just select them all and remove them 250 at a time.

With that many pending links, you might find it easier just to close submissions and start again with a new script. You're obviously being spammed to death.

You need a captcha, but not an image captcha because they are too easy to get around. PhpLynx does a text captcha, as do a few other scripts. A word filter will come in handy, and you'll find that in the SnowBlind Directory. You should also look out for a script that will allow you to ban submitters by IP, by email, or domain. You also need to be able to do mass-deletes.

By the looks of things you will need a script with all these features. I don't know how many of them are available with PhpLD, either as mods or features you can just enable. Have a look around at some of the other scripts out there and what they can do, and that will help you decide where to take your directory next and whether or not you will have to make it fully paid.

these seem to be ways to prevent more submissions.. what you need to do is process the existing ones after you've gotten something to reduce the number of submissions. I'd access your php my admin and search for words u dont want listed in your directory.. which may be hard depending on how "general" your directory is.

ask me is to raise the regular prices so lower the submission rate and than review them on daily basis ... or hire someone to approve / reject sites if u can't do it ...

don't accept cuz alot are just spam ...

    good luck
