Google has a built in decay in their algorithm which is so that there will always be fresh content for people searching on that keyword. So in the case of a website it's best to try and add fresh content to it regularly, to keep Google interested.

This drop in ranking can happen for articles too, and the best way to protect your Google ranking in this case is to get as many backlinks to your article as you can. The easiest way to do this is to create about 5 other sub articles of the master article who's position you want to maintain and in each one of the sub articles put a link to the master article in the resource box of the article, then submit these 5 sub articles to about 10 article directories.

Of course these sub articles will be duplicate content and will not be spidered by Google, but Google will still see the backlinks to your master article and this will maintain the ranking of your master article for at least a year. The term for this is making your article 'Bullet proof'

While you're not making any changes, sites all around are - they're improving and getting more backlinks

Yes, most of the time it's not what you are doing, it's what you are not doing that causes a drop in the SERP's

Exactly what I was going to say.

If you move from 11th to whatever, it means you don't have a strong enough hold, and you're not spending enough time on SEO. Spend more time going for #1, and never settle for anything less, especially #11.

its means other competitors are doing their best to beat you to your certain keyword.
