    Hi all,

I have just purchased a new server and installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. I have a number of sites I would like to install on it but am strugling with all the set up required.

I'm not sure if I can host directly or if I need to install additional applications can anyone advise me?

I've tried Apache but can't get it to initialise but I suspect this relates to port forwarding on my router maybe as I could not find a setting to enable port 80 forwarding on my smarttouch router.

I have set the router to give the Server the public IP address and renewed the IP address on the Server.

Can anyone help with what I need to do next?

    Paul

With IIS 6, it is using Port 80, you can use Apache at port 80. If you are not familiar with setup I would recommend buying a controlpanel http://www.hostingcontroller.com, once you buy from them, they can even login to help setup the controlpanel for you. That would be much easier for you.

    Hi Paul,

Yes if you are doing self management then its always best going for a control panel, you just need to confirm which one to choose, Plesk, HELM, hostincontroller etc are the leading one in market.

In your case, in 2003 server IIS is not installed by default, so isntalling Apache shouldn't showing any error. But if you already installed apache and now if you are trying IIS then problems may occur. In my opinion its better to go with IIS in windows server to get the full power. Only then you would be able to host asp.net applications..

Try removing apache and install Internet Information Service from control panel-> add remove programs-> windows components.

Please let us know if you still have any problems.

    Regards

Are you working directly on the console of the server or through a control panel? Let me know.

    Thanks,

I'm working directly in the console of Windows server at the moment Ryan. I added Apache as I know how to use it in XP but I'd rather have the security of Windows Server 2003 If I can manage to get it working.

I had some trouble with the router as well but I have that sorted now. The sites are on line at the moment using Windows XP on the same server but I'd like to switch across as soon as I can really. I have both OS installed just to allow me to get them on line

I'm not sure which control panel to use, I have experience of cpanel but don't really want to pay that much.

Srerys are you sayin that Apache and IIS are incompatible?

No trouble for running Apache and IIS together. Just need to change their ports. For example, IIS using port 80, Apache using port 8080. If you still want to use Windows, Helm provides a free version for 5 domains. Or you can switch to a Linux box with DirectAdmin control panel. It's cheap when renting from your server vendor.
