I have a blog that is wordpress based and self hosted. I currently use the default style url's that are like this:

    www.mysite.com/?p=206

I want to change the way that my blog creates pages, I want them to be like this now:

    www.mysite.com/my-keyword-here

So does anyone know how to do this with wordpress and still keep all my existing pages at the same time so that I do not lose the traffic to my site?

    Thanks!:D

You need to use a custom Permalink structure using just the /%postname%/ tag.

Go to your wordpress admin panel , then click on settings , there you will find permalinks option , click on that and select the format of the links you want for your blog , so simple !

    Change your permalinks.

The latest versions of wordpress automatically 301 your older versions to the newer versions so traffic won't be affected.

    Thanks gr8liverpoolfan,

This was the answer that I was looking for!

I knew that my permalinks needed to be changed but I was just afraid of losing all my precious rankings.

    Also, another question.............

Once I change the permalinks and I make them SEO friendly, will my new pages be able to rank for the same keywords that my old pages are ranking on?

Or do you think that once the new page starts to rank that the old page will lose ranking?

    Thanks

    Tom

There are actually chances that you may rank better and get more traffic by changing your permalinks.

www.mysite.com/my-keyword-here is better than www.mysite.com/?p=206 when you are trying to rank for your keyword, simply because the URL contains the name, and people might feel more inclined to click on your link because it seems relevant to what they are searching for.
