    Hello all,

First of all - the facts:

    1) I can get my hands on a huge list of emails.

    2) I would like to use that list in order to send out an emails advertising one of my sites/products.

    3) The people on that list have not consented to receiving such emails.

    Now on to the questions:

    a) Is this illegal? Please contemplate on that.

    b) What are the potential consequences?

    c) Could my IP be blacklisted cause of this? Any way to avoid that?

    d) And again on b and c - any other potential risks?

Thank you so very much in advance!

This is considered as spamming. You send people who have not consented to receive your emails. If you are promoting affiliate networks products/services, they may ban you if they find out.

Thanks both for your replies. It's all looking clearer now.

Magda - a quick question - Even though that search did show some really scary results, it's also worth mentioning that those people where actually trying to SCAM through SPAM. This is definitely not the case here.

Do you know if they were jailed or even accused solely based on the fact that they were spamming on such a great extent or could it be because of the fact that they were scammers?

If I am to consider doing this, it's either going to be in order to advertise a site or to sell a product of my own. Nothing scammy about it - spammy maybe. :)

Seriously leaning against doing it at this point but would like to be sure before I completely disregard the idea.

    Thanks so much again!

Thanks so much - great reply :)

The thing is that it seems too easy to just let it go off my mind without making sure first.

If I send out an email only with a link to buy my product (a link to paypal maybe or a site that allows you to sell your products from it), could I still face any risks?

Also, I know that there are some applications out there that allow you to send out emails without any authentication (no need to identify yourself or use a specific account) - would there still be a problem since my IP will be used?
