Can anyone here help me understand the implications of moving a website from shared to virtual dedicated server hosting?

    I am interested to know
    1) how PR is affected
    2) How search engines will behave immediately and in due course of time

Also i would appreciate, if anyone can give me step by step approach for this transition which will result in zero or little ngative side affects.

    Thanks

I've done this when I first started.

    1. It has no affect on your pr as long as your domain name is the same.
    2. If all the url's are the same and you have no down time when search engine bots come crawling, you would not see any difference.

Every server and site is different when it comes to moving, is your vps managed or not? Are they both cpanel? Linux or Windows? Database backend?
The simple way of do it is let your share hosting account running and do a full test on your vps using an ip address. This is the benefit if your site contain relative links instead of fully qualify names.

Saidev, So while my website is running on shared hosting, i can still move it to VDS hosting and use IP address to test everything out. Did you say right?

all of website is php/mysql on linux.
However, there is lot of user activity and i don't want to risk my website day to day operations.

I am doing this on godaddy. Is anybody using godaddy Virtual Dedicated server hosting? How are they?

    Thanks

This doesn't affect your page rank or anything related to SEO.

Secondly, why did you bought goDaddy vds. Godaddy is just good for domains but not the host. You could simply buy VPS from a better company rather than godaddy.

Thirdly, it will be a lot of hard work as godaddy servers are slow and they might not give you ssh access to transfer the site(s) easily.

Hope this helps, afaik powervps.com is the best VPS host out there in the market.

you dont need to worry about PR or anything else. just take backups (db,php etc) and you can later deploy them in your vps. First you setup your server by installing apache/php/webmin/phpmyadmin etc. you dont even need cpanel or plesk to run. You can see this tutorial to setup your server.

Yes, you can use your ip address for testing if your site uses relative linking. Once you are ready to move, change your dns record to have your domain name to point to the new ip address. Not sure what is the quality of godaddy vds as I've never used them before.
