Geo-targeting can be done with a few different methods, however you'll want to pick one specific country and not mulitple ones; multiple countries make the task more difficult. Below is a quick list of things you can do....

#1. Use the ccTLD for that specific domain name (*.co.uk, *.za, etc).

#2. Set the geo-targeting option in Google Webmaster Central (Note, if you're using a ccTLD this option isn't available).

#3. Write your content in that country's native language.

#4. Try to host your website on a web server in that specific country.

#5. Build backlinks from links that are already targeted to that country or have some of the aspects of the top 4 things mentioned in this list.

    Great advice from Feathers!

I would advice not to use sites like TLA... it will not do your site good.

Matt Cutts recently stated that the geo-targeting option in Google Webmaster Central (if available) overrides all other factors.

But I would make sure all my errrr ducks are in a row and follow the advice of feathers...

Yes, Feathers advice is 100% correct about what you should do. You also have the more difficult option of creating subdirectories for each country/language. Just make sure each sub. dir is in their language and starts with the country code. I am sure the bots will pick up on something as blatant as this.

While it involves a lot more work, you will gain more domain authority as you go making your job a little easier after the first couple countries. TRUSTED/AUTHORITATIVE *RELEVANT* BACKLINKS ARE HUGE. It is much more valuable to get a couple great trusted links from the criteria Feathers pointed out, then to just get a ton of blog spam comments from those ccTLD's. It's a lot easier than you would think. Do you research on your competitors in each niche/country and then just mine their trusted links.

I am not 100% on the time frame of this because I have yet to build it out this way, but I do know you want to build your country specific links to each directory.

For example, you would want to build out all the links you get from .co.uk domains to your yoursite.com/uk/ directory, all your French links to the yoursite.com/fr/

Those are your options. Feathers has the best option, but if you want to keep everything on a single domain, this method should work as well and have some extra benefits long term. A good example of what I mean is LG's website...

    USA: http://www.lge.com/us/
    UK: http://www.lge.com/uk
    French: http://www.lge.com/fr/

Hope it helps. Do your research and look around at what is best for your site before you make a decision.

PS: Also if you are selling a product, be sure to use that countries form of currency.
