Help Me Understand Mass Domain Holders

    Hi all,
First post, thanks in advance for any insight you can provide...

I'm working on some new business ideas and have been searching for domains for the new ventures. Typically I'm looking for common word combinations that end up being 7-12 letters long. I search the web and very often find an inactive site that just has referral links on it. Like this: http://www.racecars.com/

Then I check whois and usually find that the owner is using some type of privacy service to protect their identity. I have sent at least a half a dozen emails asking about their willingness to sell and haven't received a single response.

I understand there is a big business in buying domains and getting some natural traffic or perhaps some search engine traffic. Then making a presumably small amount money off of click through on paid links.

What I don't understand is why these domain holders don't want to sell there domains?? It seems that they would NEVER make as much from the click compensation as they could selling to a motivated business buyer.

    What am I missing???

PS - racecars.com WAS a name I wanted to buy for a business a couple of years ago and we were willing to spend in the mid $xx,xxx - no response after multiple attempts to contact.

Could be on Racecars.com, but we never made an offer in our emails. Just said we were serious and had cash, still no response.

I believe they get such type of emails all the time (because I do).
They don't even bother to answer unless you have made a straight offer to sound serious enough for them to deal with.

    OK.

Should I assume that all of these 'guys' (what is the correct title of someone in your biz?) want to sell their domians? Is there any decent money in the click compensation?

    Thanks

When someone simply parks a name, it is usually with a service like NameDrive.com or Sedo.com, who display nothing but ads. The click compensation can be quite substantial, especially for generic names like racecars.com, which probably gets a nice amount of TARGETED traffic. If you figure someone is making $50 a day, that's almost $20,000 a year. Usually you can get someone to sell you a domain name for a couple of years worth of projected income, but with a generic name, you're looking at more.

Regarding getting around whois guard, sometimes people just don't think of how many good offers they are passing on by making it difficult to get a hold of. But as was mentioned above, nice domain name owners get slammed with email with junk offers (known as appraisal scams) every day, so they usually rely on listing services.

So, if you are looking for a specific domain name, search for it on afternic.com, sedo.com, greatdomains.com, buydomains.com, etc. I also have automatic notifications sent by ebay when domains I want get listed there, since I missed out on a really good deal for one I wanted. You can also just join the major domaining forums and post a thread in their "Domain Names Wanted" thread.

    Hope this helps.

I own a lot of domains and a lot of them ar parked and waiting for future projects. Would I sell them for the right price... yes! But it's a waste of time (usually) to respond to those types of email.

If you want my attention. Put the offer in the email and I'll look. Otherwise I'm not going ot waste time going back and forth with you only to hear (usually) that your only willing to pay 1/10th of what I want.
