Help me to figure out DNS setup problem

    Hi all,

Right now I am using a stupid host, they are not at all ready to help the clients. They only speak technical jargon.

I have purchased a VPS and did Cpanel intialsetup. But I am getting the below alert mail, even though I believe everything is right.

"Your hostname (####) could not be
resolved to an IP address. This means that /etc/hosts is not set up
correctly, and/or there is no dns entry for
your hostname(####). Please be sure that the contents
of /etc/hosts are configured correctly, and also that there is a
correct 'A' entry for the domain in the zone file.

Some or all of these problems can be caused by /etc/resolv.conf
being setup incorrectly. Please check that file if you believe
    everything else is correct.

You may be able to automatically correct this problem by using the
'Add an A entry for your hostname' option under 'Dns Functions' in
    your Web Host Manager."

I see that there is correct A entry for Hostname with correct ip. When I informed this to my host I got below response.

"Are you hosting DNS locally or off-site? If off-site have you checked there?"

What does they mean by "hosting DNS locally or off-site"? And how to check at off-site.

    Thanks

Off-site means dns hosted on another server. Locally means same machine.

    Hello there,

A couple things to check, first, your resolv.conf file, make sure you have good external DNS servers listed in there. Second, your zone file for the server name, and ensure that the A record is pointing back to the correct IP address. If you need help, feel free to PM me, and I can take a look for you.

You first need to check with your domain registrar to see who are the official DNS servers for your domain.
If you want to use your cPanel to act as DNS servers please make sure your domain registrar point DNS servers to your cPanel server IPs (you need at least two IPs).
In this way, you host your DNS locally on your cPanel server which you have complete control.

You should make sure you have DNS A entry added for your hostname.
