Hello friend, I have my own VPS at MochaHost.com, but its not good hosting provider, as they are just know how to suspend user's account then manage their server. So, i'm thinking to get my own Laptop to Dedicated server, which can perform good for heavy traffic. I have my laptop configuration as, 2 GB RAM Pentium(R) Dual Core 300 GB Hard Disk what you think, will it sufficient to manage my website. i willl be having about 10-20K visitors per month. and i have seen one article to make my own Dedicated server i.e http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/php/how-to-setup-a-dedicated-web-server-for-free/ Can you tell me is that instructions given above is perfect to get my own dedicated server ready. And, what additional requirements will be there, as i know, i will need one static IP, and special OS to manage server, got that idea from above article. But, i need some solution from DP's server experts. Waiting for replies.. Thank you, Daksh Mehta
Hi Dakshy, You need to check your internet provider did they allow to run own web server from home. Most internet provider don't allow running any server from private user. Mostly you need to have business internet contract with provider. To use laptop for dedicated web server I think its bad idea. First thing is a problem is a hard drive. Mostly built-in hard drive fail after one year if you using 24/7. Another thing you can't add any more hard drive to make any RAID protection, which give you protection from any hard drive faliure. For testing purposes you can use your laptop but for live web server not. What you find web site is alright to follow. Rudolf
you can do that , just install webserver application in your lappie like xampp or wamp (if your using windows), or lamp if your a linux user. after installation you can access your server on internet using your public ip. agree with rudolf, your harddrive will crash soon if it on for 24/7 , using a pc with extra cooler better than using a lappie .
No offense, but at MochaHost prices, what did you expect from the host... Honestly... if it is a site generating income... don't do the hosting Ur self... unless you are not worried about down time. As far as the laptop goes... if it has no heat issues... and HD in good shape give it a shot... However, be ready to dish out money for a battery pretty soon... new HD... etc... at the end when it is done and said you been better off grabbing a server from Dell Outlet or building a cheap $250 box ur self... (Asus Motherboard, 2GB Ram, DualCore CPU, 1TB Sata HD... heck grab a MB with built-in RAID and 2 500GB HDs for RAID1 Config) Personally I'm a fan of CentOS... over other Distros... here is a Guide for it... http://www.howtoforge.com/centos-5.1-server-lamp-email-dns-ftp-ispconfig
If you think Mocahost is bad, just wait until you're running your web site off a laptop and serving sites over a broadband connection. Don't be silly. If you want to do it yourself, get a decent server and colocate it somewhere close to you, but you'd be much better off just finding a better host and saving that sort of set-up till you have enough income from your site to justify going your own way. If you want to turn your laptop into a server for local development that's another thing, but certainly not for running a live web site. I install a server OS on my laptop so I can work on stuff and demo it while on the move, but I'd never contemplate it being a live server for internet connections.
Why the hell would you want to turn your laptop into a dedicated server? Firstly that is not efficient at all, it wouldn't be able to handle a serious server load unless you're running it inside of a freezer. On second thought just put your laptop inside your freezer and good luck!
Actually for a very minimally traffic'd site, a laptop could be a great alternative to a more expensive solution. Its got its own built in UPS for one.
Did you read what the OP said? Let me quote him for you: I don't doubt the quality of a laptops components, there's just several things you need to take into consideration when setting up a dedicated server. You want to make sure that thing is never going to shut down, it's running low temp, and maintenance is easily done. Not only that but if OP couldn't be arsed to purchase a small computer for the task at hand, it shows he intends to continue using the laptop. That kind of stress will easily subtract from its life expectancy and if that's not the case then I don't know what the hell is wrong with him.
Hi you can have own server on laptop just take business account with static ip . however which OS you want to use ? windows or Linux. one more thing you need windows server license if you want to use windows , else use linux
Sure, but it will be a bit more complicated. Years ago, there were tools and tricks you could use to keep your dynamic IP refreshed each time it changed. I think http://www.dyndns.com can do this for you. But as others have suggested, paying for a static IP and an account that allows you to host a server is the proper route to take.
