You really need to get good traffic tracking software, to see how long the users you do get stay on your site, what they're looking at, etc...good stats can show wonders, i'm saying track everything. It can really paint a picture to things you can fix, improve or remove. For my site I saw people searching for some things that returned no results so I immediately went out and got that what they were looking for, so if they come back or other people search for it, they'll find it. It's all about balancing a good quality site and working hard at promoting it via the methods others have already said.
Link building will not help your site if your site is shit, on site seo is the primary focus - get that wrong and you can do all the link building you want - you'll still fail.
