    Read tutorials, read open source code (Google Code Search is great for that) and practice.
    By the way, just PHP won't get you far, also aim to master MySQL, (X)HTML, CSS et cetera.

    I almost always use php.net to help me find anything I need. To start out I would find a tutorial on google and go with it, then add stuff to it by looking up what you need on php.net.

    Well if you are starting your programming career, I will recommend you to go for Ruby on Rails. Its really growing fast.

    BTW, download the PHP manual from php.net. It is really helpful for a person learning PHP.
