    You can try vb.net and start with their free version and that's the Express version. You can start looking around to few codes/projects from a1vbcode.com or similar websites.

    I learned programming through solving problems with my classmates before in college then I created solution for small businesses. So what I did, is find time to look for problems and provided them with a program/software created using VB.net. I always believe that as a programmer I don't need to know all corners of the programming language you like to use but only the basics. And I only learned the things that really matters to what ever projects I am into.

    Google is always been my friend ever since.

    if your looking to make cross platform apps then Java, if you want to do web development then PHP, If you want to do Front end web development then Javascript, HTML5 & CSS. If you are looking for a general Programing Language then Python,Ruby or c++ would do too. Program languages are created for different tasks, in the end you learn them all
