I first want to say I am awful at seo. I really have no clue about it or what it really takes to have good seo.

I want www.historum.com to be on the front page of the search "history forum"

How do I start? I have done a few link exchanges. I have done adwords. I currently get like 250 uniques/day

98% of traffic comes from type-ins/direct/bookmark
    1.5% links
    .5% search engines

I have like 40-50 pages indexed in Google.

    Please help me!

you have got session id's in your url's and those need to go to get more pages indexed
try able2know or there is another one i cant remember the name of the forum

get content relevant static url's for your forum and it will take off in some time :)

adwords for a forum? i wouldnt spend money on traffic for a forum ,yeh may be some money on content but traffic no way :)

There is no quick answer to SEO, you need to put in the time to reading the forum - everything you'll need can be found here.

Google likes relevant backlinks. The age of your site is going to work against you for any competitive keyword. Ranking for a highly competitive keyword can be a year long process more than an event.

Rethink your keywords. According to Overture, "History Forum" only has 4 people a day searching for it. A #1 ranking might get you 1 or 2 visitors a day if you are lucky.

    its a forum

    forget about targeting keywords
just do content relevant url's and thats what will get you traffic does it matter what word gets you traffic as long as its people who are looking for the content you have come in ?

moral of the story is that dont worry about targeting keywords it will just happen on its own

If you want to rank for a keyword such as "history forum" you must use the keyword everywhere you can on the site. The only place I can find the keyword is in your title tag. You should use the words in your content, in page URLs, in links, in the ALT parameter of your image tags, in the META description tag -- everywhere.

If "history forum" is the only lkeyword you are worried about - add a link to your forum on every page that using the text History Forum and link it to your homepage. And then start link building with that anchor text also.

It's really a bad idea to have session id's shown. Its even considered a security risk. Don't worry about google. You can always redirect everything to clean urls by removing session id's with your .htaccess.
I think you may have to put a properly configured php.ini in your home folder, in order to get rid of session id's completely and use cookies instead (I remember I did something like this).
