Hi everyone, I am currently 6th for my keyword with around 162,000 competitors. My question is how can I get a top 3 spot? Would getting better quality backlinks with higher PR help? Hope you can give me some advice!
You have to beat them out with PAID advertisements and CONTENT.....you need to have more useful content than them and feed the hell out of google adwords to get more clicks than them. ADVERTISING IS KEY!!!!!!!
Will advertising eventually boost my rank though? I know it will generate more traffic but will it help rank wise?
You do not need to beat anyone with paid advertising.... just update your site weekly and focus on getting more inbound links through article submissions, press releases, link bait etc... The way you got to 6th place is the way you get to 3rd.. just do more of it. Your on-page factors will determine a lot as well.
I can say, study on SEO tips, Article Marketing tips, PPC, and another "low cost" but need "a bit of hardwork" and "high payoff" is involve in blog post and forums.
NOT TRUE!! update your site regularly with new contents and increase your backlinks still more through article submissions, blog comments etc.. you may even get the position 1 good luck!!
you have a very low competition.you can get to first position with very few links - try submitting articles to directories and also do directory submission.Make sure the anchor text is proper.You can easily get the rankings in the next update.
agree with "itcoll", the competition is not tough. I use to do something like this, search with the keyword, then investigate the top raking, there should be a blog in some of them, then put comment + backlink to your website.
Just to verify, 162,000 competitors when I search "keyword". When I search the keyword normally 45,000,000 results come up. 162,000 is considered fairly low still right? Also, I should easily be able to dominate a niche that comes about with around 50,000 competitors when I search "keyword" right?.

truth is that there are about 6 different ways to get up there. More clicks and traffic works by generation through adwords, but the easiest highest return on investment for you is going to be getting good quality backlinks. That is not a whole lot of competition. i would take me about a week to get the market. Write some great articles and put them on ezines goarticles and articledashoboard with links back to your site using your keywords as anchor text. That should do the trick. Or go with paid links on some high pr websites in your industry. Just make sure that they fit the site or the links might get identified as paid links.
