I am trying to find a map of the Wisconsin river from the middle to late 1800's that shows the log and fur trading routes and features such as trading posts, salloons, and logger rest pits. It is a long story, but does any one know of any websites that might have these maps? TYIA -Henny
http://content.wisconsinhistory.org/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tp&CISOPTR=5079 Is this sort of what you're looking for? Are you even sure what you're asking for exists?
I'm not helping you with your 8th grade history assignment. Seriously I hope you find what you need. I have no idea where you'd find them online, but I've seen them in books and maps before.
Wooohoo! Thanks Morgan's Mom! This http://content.wisconsinhistory.org/cgi-bin/docitemview.exe?CISOROOT=/tp&CISOPTR=5070 has a feature I have been in 20 or so libraries and the congressional library website trying to find! I have a really old treasure map from a small fight between the Sauk Indians, and the National Gaurd in which the paymaster hid his gold. The problem was orientating the map. It has two fetures listed, 1 I found a long time ago, the other not till tonight! Thanks! I know it sounds corny, but I am going to take a week off this fall to hunt for it.
No problem Henny. I like a challenge once in awhile. Have you tried going to the Wisconsin Historical Society?
That's sounds awesome. I have good tracking skills and I'm actually part Indian. If that sounds like something you need on your trip let me know.
I actually did, the closest reference to the spot I was looking for was on a railroad map. Again, it on ly listed one reference point which did me no good.
I am definatly going to have to make my own map to get to the point of interest. There are no roads anywhere within 20 miles of the point that I can tell. Probably my best bet is to canoe to the point from a town nearby, GPS sure will come in handy.
Shitty part is now that I know where to begin, I may have to wait till spring. The expense of the trip, although only about 100 miles from my house, is going to be in the $2000 - $3000 price range as I don't have ANY equipment. But thats OK, I will have lots of time to plan well.
Oh, Hell Yes! I have always wanted to do something like this, ALWAYS. Besides, how much does a week in Vegas cost? I'd say my odds are probably worse than most slot machines, but just think of the Blog I will get to write
Ummm, alrighty then. You go right ahead and do that. I think I'd rather go to Vegas, but as long as you think it's worth it...good luck man!
Woohoo! Visited the Wisconsin Historical Society today and got more info. It appears the site I want to explore has some other markers, combined with my map provides visual markers coordinating my maps markers! I cannot wait! I think I am going to get my digi camera and go to the site tomorrow with 0 equipment just to prospect the area. This wil give me all winter to examine the photos and try and figure out the new visual markers! You guys probably dont give a rats ass, but to me this is the most exciting thing I have ever done.!.
Well, you're right. Don't really give too much of a rat's ass...but I'm excited for you anyway. What are you going to do once you're done your expedition? Other than blog about it.
