Hello guys, I just got a new dedicated server with cpanel, as you might guess it crashed but I already fixed the mistake, the problem is that I now have my boss all over me

the problem was with a dns setting inside the server, but my boss is giving me the "when I was hosted with yahoo for $12.50 a month it never went down, now Im paying a LOT more money and it goes down"

how can I explain this situation to my boss for he to understand

Thanks a lot for your answers

Tell him to save his bitching for when there's the same number of people at the site as it used to take the Yahoo hosted site to start slowing down.
Then when that number of people come around & the site doesn't slow down, ask him what it was he said awhile ago about the site going down again.

Don't try to explain stuff to bosses, bosses call explainations excuses, period.

Tell him the positive effects of having your own server. Such as, you will always have the response time and resources vs. shared hosting. Hardware failure happens, no matter what quality server or service you are using, sometimes these things just happen. It's good to know the issue is resolved, what was the issue?

Be sure to verify that your server is running proper backups as well. Shared hosting is too unstable and sooner or later your boss would realize that if you stayed at that level, good thing you changed his mind. Someone has to be smart!

Tell him to stick what he knows best, pushing paper.

Go with the truth but throw as much technical information at him that he'll get a headache listening to what you are saying.

If you screwed up, pay up.

If the result was no fault of your own (peering problems on the internet or whatever). Do what carmac said and tell him to shove it. If you're good at what you do, you can verbally harass your boss as much as you'd like without fearing for your job. (if he's a jackass of course.. no reason to harass a normal sane thinking individual.. I'm speaking of those bosses who get all coked up and run around micromanaging everything.. I'm sure some of you have meet someone like that..)

Tell him you're convinced he's a better sysadmin, and give him access to the cpanel - and wait. ;)
