My friend doesn't like google ( he uses yahoo). I've tried to explain to him that just about everyone in the world uses google as their search, but he's stubborn. Anyone know where I can find the info I'm looking for?
Just because everyone uses it, doesn't make it the best. It is best for some things, but on some searches it fails miserably. MSN tends to be more up to date, google tends to list older sites. Google is very subject to spam simply because most people use it - it's the main engine spammers target. Yahoo, I never had must luck with it, but it may be that I just don't use it enough. I suspect your argument is fruitless. It's a matter of personal choice and comfort. PS: back in it's early days, google was without a doubt the best... that's why it's so popular now. It's current popularity is based on how far ahead it used to be.
Absolutely true, doesn't negate my point. Google is the primary target because of it's popularity. Actually, that brings up another good point... that google injures itself sometimes in it's efforts to fight spam. Several good search engines have been left on the side of the information highway because they ruined thier listings in their fight to eliminate spam. I don't think google will go that far... but everyone that's been here for a while has seen google hurt the quality of their own listings in their spam fight... (see sandbox as one easy example). I'm not saying this makes google worse or better. It's something all search engines have to balance. That balance is one of the things that makes what search engine a person uses an individual decision. What they are comfortable with.
oh, Jim, here's a good site with lots of info about the different search engines: http://searchenginewatch.com/ But even there, I don't think you'll find anything that says what the 'best' search engine is. Just which is the biggest - and we know that already
what about googles gmail, suggest, earth, ability to search for allinanchor:"keyword" or link:"", integrated dictionary and calculator etc?
everyone will find some tools easier to use than the others. my brother use myyahoo very much, and he is very well on that. so ask him to change is not that easy.
It's a matter of personal choice. Personally I use yahoo for my daily searching and don't see the need to switch to google
why would you want to do that? you friend is free, let him live his life freely. if you can't find yourself good reasons to convince him, they are maybe no good reasons enough for your friend. or is he a slave or something? let the guy in peace, is what i think you ought to do.
Oh, true, I was focusing on search only (and other engines do have the extra operators, for example, try link: on msn's search - works much better than on google). However, if you are going to expand into the other products that each company offers... consider microsofts 'windows', 'ie', 'windows servers', 'ms office', etc. I think they got google beat Yahoo also has mail, auctions, chat, and whatnot (haven't used them much, so I don't know what else). Again though, I'm not arguing that any of these engines are better than the other. I use google myself, and msn as a backup when google fails to find what I am looking for. I'm just saying that I don't think google is all that 'superior' in actual search results. Maybe it is a little, but not always, and not so much that I would try to convenience anyone else to dump what they prefer and use google exclusively, nor imply they were backwards for not using the most popular engine.
I find it much easier to convince you it is not superior... http://www.google.com/search?q=302+hijack They completely ignored the problem for the longest time, bigdaddy was supposed to have fixed it. The verdict is still out. It is simply the most popular.
This is not a new debate. It seems to always be that lay people think google sucks and prefer yahoo. Web Masters prefer to kiss google ass.
Google just lost a little bit of its superiority: Amazon finds MSN But I still feel that Googles results are better than MSNs. Especially the new 64.233.something test datacentres
Ahhh... that is what I saw Sunday night, when checking to see who had a new site indexed. I thought they were just doing something temporary, they were having problems or making some changes. Interesting.
A lot of my friends use Yahoo!. I've been using it for some stuff, but Google and Yahoo! definitely work well togther.
