I have a Dell laptop which I bought in June 2005. It is an Inspiron 600 and had served me well. When I replace it later this summer, it'll be with a similar model that has more features and still will cost less than US$500.

I would also consider HP, Toshiba and most other name brand laptops too at least for comparative purposes.

... make sure that you have something better than the generic, crummy laptop bag that usually comes with it. If you're a student, they have really nice laptop backpacks these days, which are great because you can carry books and your laptop in the same bag. If you decided on something smaller, like a netbook, you might just only need a protective sleeve...but I'd recommend something with more protection. V-Top bags are great because they're easy to open and access your other stuff, like reports and papers, without having to remove your laptop to find it. Or, if you want to look uber-cool, take a look at the new Alienware cases. In any case, now that you've dished out some bucks for the laptop, my recommendation is that you protect it.
