Create an account with ustream. Sign in and make sure your camera is on the fishes. Click Go Live button and streaming will start. Now give her the link to your ustream page. Simple ;)

that is nice .. but i was tying to do it .. without the help of those two sites....

what if you only have a camera pointing in your fish tank ?

i was mostly thinking about doing it for the fun of it ..

i was thinking about setting up a home page
    a registration link / form
    a login link /form

a member only page where this fish tank video is streamed ..

Don't do that, don't make your girlfriend sign up for some crappy web page you made. It's fine if you want to learn how to do that. But dude, you can probably make the stream private. You can earn like 3$ per 1k views. (on twitch TV i think..)

Would you really mind if someone would be watching your fish? Perhaps they might find it soothing or interesting. You are already wasting electricity and internet 24/7... might as well make it public.

If you make money streaming your fish, then they are truly... gold fish

In regards to your actual question, Web Sockets is more suitable for actual video streaming. And since its just Javascript you can still use something like PHP to restrict the web page. (you don't have to make a registration page to actually restrict the page... IP restriction, secret cookie value or HTTP authentication works equally as well and far less work for what you are trying to achieve)

thanks for the very informative thread..

could i do it without a java or javascript involved ?

so far my understanding of things looks like this..

    the html thermocol
    [IMG]

    the php thermocol

    the mysql thermocol

the html thermocol has a labelname in it ..

the mysql table has a feild name in it... corresponding to a labelname in the html thermocol

the php thermocol has the ability to get that labelname and put that in the mysql feildname

    $_GET['labelname']

    few important things to notice

for example when making a registration thermocol

    the html has labelname
mysql has feildname (which is sort of like the labelname in the html thermocol )
    php has $variablename
    php has $_GET['labelname']
    ...
