I usually do about 6-10 submits on digg and SU, and some other social sites and it works well for me in terms of traffic to my sites. I've not yet seen any negative results of any sort so far with regards to my websites due to this number of submits in the social sites.

SU is Stumble Upon. There is a great post about it just a few posts down. I need to find out more about it myself.
You can submit to dig more than 10 times. But not all at the same time. Yo should take few days break between the submission.
