I've reluctantly switched on comments for my blog, which I more or less use as a website rather than a traditional blog - but I want to start some interactivity. My problem is managing and moderating comments. What exactly do I need to do to have it so I have to moderate every comment (for non registered users) before it shows up. When people reply, the comment appears but says it is in moderation. What's the use in that? I want it so it doesn't appear until I've approved it. For registered users I'd like it so after their first registered comment is moderated, they are free to comment with no moderation. Hope that makes sense.
I always assumed it was a normal feature, I've been to many blogs where I've made a comment but it won't show up until somebody ok's it.
I can't find anything. I thought this would be one of the most sought after features and assumed it was there by default. Why would you want to moderate every comment, if that comment still shows up either way? You may as well just allow all comments and delete ones you don't want.
What you are seeing there is for the commenters eyes only. If you go to another computer and visit that post page, you will not see the comment. (Alternatively, you could delete the cookie for your site and that will make it disappear too). That said, usually after you approve a comment for an individual, WordPress allows them to comment later on, without further moderation. I think there is a setting in the CP to disallow this functionality so you can moderate all comments. Basically put, I do not think you need any plugins at all. You should be good to go.
The Auto Moderate Comments plugin works on a timeframe computation. It compares the date of the post and the date of the last comment with the date of the current comment. Kind of a misleading title, IMO. A great WP Comment Plugin blog post from Lorelle if you are interested: WordPress Plugins for Comments « Lorelle on WordPress
