Hi guys, I have an idea for a directory, and it requires a look and feel like DirJournal. Is this type of template readily available? If not, are there deseigners/developers who can create it? Which directory software would be required and how do I go about searching for a designer who can do this type of work? Also, what are the primary features I should be looking for in a successful directory? I am looking for: 1) Reliability 2) Ease of maintenance 3) Good support 4) Good spam control 5) Ease of customizing the interface Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich
dirjournal uses phpLD which is the market leader. there are others to consider tho like esydicate, phplynx, sitesift etc phpld is my favourite
use phpLD you can find most the mods for it for free That's what I've been using for 3 years, and plan to use it for many more. dir journal is nice, good job anon I hadn't see that one b4
I personally like www.esydicate.com and www.phpmydirectory.com, but, PHPLD is most popular and has the most Mods available. Any good template designer can give you the required look. -Princy
Darn good job. You both should be highly congratulated, along with the site owner, for some very original and highly functional user interface. If you are available for work, please PM me. I would like to learn more about the services you have to offer. Thank you. Rich
Hi Mikey, alpna and Loc.M, Thanks much for your recommendations. Mods are very important, as I have discovered with Wordpress. Several mods (e.g. All-In-One-SEO) were very useful, so I was glad I had them. PHPLD, appears to have good support, but I am not sure how good is its spam protection and security. One thing I learned from Wordpress is that mods often introduce security leaks. If I find that I need better protection, is it possible to mod it with Akismet or Bad Behavior to trap the nasty ones. Also, how secure is the core? Has it been hacked lately? I also am looking at and like eSyndicate and PHPMyDirectory. Any way to get some quick pros and cons on these, including PHPLD? Doesn't have to be exhaustive. The the two or three primary features that made you choose one or the other, assuming that you evaluated more than one. Thanks much for the help. Rich
The choice is limitless Rich, you'll find good for all of them and bad for all of them, and everyone of us has our favourites. Me as you can see by my sigs I'd go for phpLynx every time as it has just about every feature already built in which saves having to mod. phpld does have lots of mods, so do other scripts and if you don't mind paying and adding them your spoilt for choice, if your looking for out of the box features though check the comparison chart it tells its own story. Comparison List Good luck whatever script you end up using.
