Sadly, you should have already begun your SEO work when you created the site but this will have to do.

Find keywords people would use to find your site and target them. Search Google for "allintitle:keywords go here" (without the quotes) and usually anything under 30-50k is a keyword you can target, but you need to know your niche.

Get your site content filled with these keywords but avoid stuffing them everywhere in unnatural places. Then build some links going to your site where the anchor text is a keyword you are going after (so something like Keyword Here. You can do this by submitting articles, making blog posts, posting social bookmarks, etc.

That should get you off to a nice start, at least a PR 2-3, then you can go from there.

By the way, before applying SEO techniques in your site, I suggest you should look closely and make sure your site is well optimised (on-site) before trying to do it externally.

In most cases, most SEO efforts became somewhat of a waste effort because the site itself is not SEO ready.

This is absolutely true. How long since you released the site?

It may be worthwhile to postpone your opening and have your site redone with a strong SEO strategy in place. In a perfect world SEO would start long before the first line of code is written.

E-commerce websites can be amongst the trickiest to SEO depending on the number of products you have, uniqueness of products etc. Depending on the traffic you have at the moment it may be too late to opt for a complete rebuild without losing income, so do your keyword research and work on some strong landing pages for your most valuable terms

If you have a dynamic website , make sure the contents are readable without login. The url are SEO friendly.
Use less AJAX and java script.
Php sites it is not a problem but I have found this problem in java and .net driven sites

Learn about the basics of onpage seo at website design and basic seo - eg importance of putting keywords into title tag, h1-h6 tags, image names, alt text content etc and sample code where relevant.
Once you have done this, get some backlinks to your site using a mix of articles, social bookmarking, press releases, directories, forum, blog commenting etc - make sure you vary your anchor text to avoid Google dismissing all links as artifically generated.
