HELP! How can I erase this personal info from the web!

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by sarahkitchen, Apr 11, 2006.

I did a whois lookup for my domain and I realized that there was some personal info there. I'm wondering how I can delete it, or give it fake stuff. Would I have to talk with the company I registered the domain with?

I can't believe it did something so stupid. This will be the ONLY place my phone# and address appear right next to my name on the WHOLE WEB!

    PLEASE HELP

Yeah, you're going to have to contact the company that registered your domain if they don't offer a domain administration section to where you can change your information in the whois.

You cannot delete or give fake info, as your domain may then be terminated. You may pay for a private registration, though.

Your information can very easily be made private and not viewable in whois search. Contact your domain registration company or login to your domain admin account and hide your details!

You can pay for WhoIs Privacy with some registrars.

The other option is to get a post office box and use that as an address. This will help somewhat.

Ultimately though your private information is probably available for less than $20 via any of the credit score companies.

I did the same thing. You need to go into your domain account and change the information. I had to do it with many. You can set the address to a Post Office Box or other adress, but as already said, it must be a real one. Same goes for the name and telephone number.

There are also some services that do offer to provide private registration, such as DomainsByProxy via GoDaddy. I have read mixed things about that service and have not used it myself.

If you are mainly worried about a random person online seeing your info, DBP might work fine.

Also, I noticed that Alexa had some information of mine posted as well. You can go there and they have a file you can upload to your site (proving you own it) and with that file you can limit what of your information shows. You can eliminate the phone number, etc., if you want.

    Good luck.

Even when it is changed, you need to check that the page hasn't been cached or the info will still be available.
If it has been cached contact google or whoever has cached it and give the reasons that you need the page/info removed.

There are also sites that store whois history, so once that information is out there, there is really no way to undo it.

Why? What have you got to hide? :D

Use Namecheap.com next time; they give you one years free privacy, and it's a few dollars a year after that if you want to continue it.

the only way to "hide" all of your information for a domain is starting out new.

put it on a box with no other domains you own. don't link to it with other domains you own. don't tie it in any way to the last one. Use private registration services.

the whois history is accessible to anybody and is quite cheap.

the lesson here is read read read about all precautions and keeping private data private before you do anything you don't want public.
