I have been using Odesk for about a year and a half now as both an employee and employer.

The one thing I have noticed is that there are so many people from the middle east applying for jobs with an outrageously low price that the rest of the world can't compete... so they get the jobs. The problem with that is, most of them do a horrible job and either get fired or never rehired again because they get bad feedback.

Now, employers are getting wise to this problem. They are not hiring the lower priced applicant just because they have a low price. They know that in most cases, if they do hire them and they get a crappy job, they will have to spend even more money to hire someone to fix the job that the first person messed up. Therefore, employers are starting to spend a little more for better quality. I'm sure you have heard the term "you get what you pay for".

I would suggest the following rules of thumb to everyone on odesk:

    1. Don't sell yourself short. Charge what you think your time and skills are worth.

    2. Be honest about your abilities. Don't tell an employer you can do something if you don't already know how to do it. Do your research and learn how to do something BEFORE you accept a job... to be good at anything takes practice. Don't think you will get hired, learn how to do it and then get paid for it. You will most certainly do a crappy job and end up with negative feedback.

    3. Actually READ the job posting. Employers outline what they need and give specifics. That is how you are going to know if you can do the job or not.

    4. Write a custom cover letter for EVERY JOB you apply for. Employers just hit delete on applications with a form cover letter that says nothing... most of the time the cover letter is outlining skills that don't even apply to the job they are posting about. This is why employers have started to say "mention the word [insert word here] on the fourth line of your application so I know you are real) When they see that you don't follow simple instructions, they know that either you are just spamming or you just don't follow directions. Nobody wants to have somebody do a job for them who can't follow their guidelines for the job they are paying for.

    5. Show REAL examples of your previous work in your portfolio that are relevant to the job you are applying for. (I had a guy apply for a job I posted once who said he wrote the script for google)

These simple things should get you noticed and get you jobs.

I hope this helps you... good luck.

    hi,
i am working with oDesk form 2 years and working perfect for me.
have you develop your cover letter according to your job criteria?
are you applying on related jobs?
also interview part is one of the most important which decide that you might have job or not.

so consider these options in your mind only than you can get a good job.
