Help - Conversions have dropped to near zero

Hope someone could take a look at my wife's camping gear site and give us some suggestions.

It's been running for around 5 years now and until around a year ago was doing OK with conversions around 1% and 500 unique visitors daily. 87% of that is from Google organic listings. Then it started to drop off. Now we've still got the same number of uniques (600 yesterday says Analytics) but no-one buying. In the past 5 days it hasn't made a sale. I've put a transaction through myself to make sure everything is still working, but I'm just lost as to what to do next.

I started up Adwords yesterday to try and bring some targetted traffic to the products. The newsletter thing is new as well so we don't have a big subscriber list. It's August. Historically we should be making a few sales this month, but this is looking grim. I know people are going camping because I couldn't get booked into a campsite next weekend. What are we doing wrong?

    The site is at www.outdoorscotland.co.uk
    Thanks in advance.
    Adam

other then the fact that the site looks very plain i cant see any reason why they wont buy. maybe you need to advertise a bit more. to a new crowd

in general terms i agree with magicbox on this one. The site design is a little plain. However, really its the content & products that matter.

Incentivising the surfer to buy is paramount here. Lots more call to actions (encouraging people to click on the product for more info) , also you should run at least one special offer, or sale item every week/month, as usually if people think they are getting a bargain then they will be more inclined to purchase another item. Also one way to get people to buy is so mention thats there's only x amount left - grab a bargain, etc!

Maybe a good idea would be to get a designer to have a once over and see what he can come up with. There are loads of good designers here in the forum..

anyway thats my two pence worth :)

I can see your point on the design. It is pretty basic looking. I think I'll liven it up somewhat and add a sale section which has half a dozen items on special each month. I'll also get Mrs C to look at further advertising opportunities.
Really appreciate the time you took to look at it. Thanks

Since your hit count has not fallen, I would chalk the drop in sales up to stiffer competition and the economy. Offer incentives to buy......free shipping, special discounts etc....

Try investing in an seo software like Web CEO and get your site optimized so you can out rank your competition.
