HELP! Complete newbie here starting a forum for my site

Just as the topic explains. I'm completely new to the world to the backend of forums. I just got a new forum at "forumz.cc" and I guess they use phpBB as their backend and it's confusing me like crazy. Also at this point, I do have the use of a server for my site domain, and would like to extend myself beyond the restrictions of forumz.cc.

So, I think what I'm going to do now is install phpBB and set it up from there. Am I in over my head having no knowledge about php in general? Or will this be something I can easily change background color/images, etc?

Also, I've been hearing things about how vBulletin might be better and what not. Not having current funding, is the transition from one system to another possible without losing account information and what not?

Thanks in advance for any help and insight!

vBulletin is awesome, when your able to afford it your gonna love it.
but don't use phpbb, thats almost like sending smoke signals.
give SMF a chance, you'll like it better then that other forum package.

and the best of luck to you and your project. ;)

phpBB3 give it a try too.

SMF is good alternative, but I don't like it because of its rough interface :( Specially Admin Panel is rough :(

My advice: stay away from phpBB. It sucks and has lots of security holes. If you're planning to use a free forum software try SMF (Simple Machines Forums). It's the best free forum script out there (and the safest one too).

However, if your budget allows it go for vBulletin.

    Hi Dear,
Maybe you didn't check phpBB3. I have read too many +ve reviews on Security of phpBB3. Yeah, there were many security holes in phpBB2, but I never heard it about version 3. Till yet, I didn't read any report about security holes for phpBB3. I am preferring phpBB3, but I love SMF too, the only problem will be ugly & non users friendly admin interface. I have checked v2 Beta version, but no change in admin panel interface. While phpBB3 is great user friendly interface.

I think, price of vbulletin ($150) will be much high for Newbies

I personally would recommend you to research more about phpBB3 vs SMF

    Good Luck Friend! :)

Well to tell the truth, I haven't checked phpBB3. I had horrible experiences with phpBB and phpBB2 so I decided to quit using this forum software for good.

Anyways, if it is as good as mudassar says maybe it's worth to give it a try (not me, of course hehe).

    Good luck, mtseng!

I would start with phpbb or smf, then as the forum gets successful, move to vbulletin ;)

I like vBulletin, and only vBulletin. But if you cannot buy yourself a license yet my suggestion for a free alternative is MyBB.

:( I am sorry to say, but I will never recommend MyBB, there are a lot hacking reports for MyBB, phpBB & SMF are the best alternatives

Who do you recommend as a host for SMF?
