Hi Todd. I'm a self taught web designer for 8 years and the only thing that kept me going is the passion for my work. Modern web design requires a lot of study both theory and practical as things are always changing in this business so you have to keep up to date. The internet is a really good resource for tutorials but books have better quality content and don't controdict themselves like different websites do causing you to end up all confused. As a consultant I can advise you to learn Photoshop and CSS/XHTML. These two skills will enable you to start creating static websites and create a solid foundation for your future in webdesign. Very good advice for a learner. Actually knowing your way around css/xhtml gives you the foundation to build on. Just like DORES stated here that you need "PASSION" to be good in the game is the major keyword here. You would have to love web designing with all your heart before you can face the challenges it brings. Start by googling a HTML tutorial... learn some really basic stuff, then progress onto CSS tutorials and then consider heading into PHP or ASP

read html/css/photoshop tutorials until your eyes bleed. when eyes stop bleeding, repeat. it is not an easy path, but is very rewarding and fun so stick to it!
