I think that the conservatives and liberals are arguing on two different areas on health care. Most conservatives I know are not against giving health care to everyone who is a citizen, they are against the government's history of waste and the results of government ran health care in Canada and parts of Europe that have had ill effects on the quality of health care. I would have no problem if I thought it would be ran in a way that made sense, but I think of the systems we already have in place that are so out of whack. SS, food stamps, Post Office, etc... Attacking a For-profit corporation for making a profit does not help your stance. I would say that if there were insurance companies that were contracted by the government that were non-profit, that paid normal wages and had to compete with at least 2 others, that it would bring the costs down for insurance. Sure, it seems unreasonable that something that is like a commodity should be profited on in such a way. Also, like others have stated - tort reform. Some things have to change, but some of this is the bread and butter of our senators, they got there by being ambulance chasers, etc...
It does when they are pretty blatantly doing wrong. If most agree they are then I don't see how pointing it out to those that don't is a bad thing. Now there's an idea. Been saying that all along.
I would agree with you except that the bill also mandates health insurance coverage which would fix the problem of people not buying health insurance until they need it. I agree that this bill isn't as good (not nearly as good) as it should be, but I think it's a mistake to look past all of the positive ways it would impact the health care system. --- Again... I would prefer a medicare for all sort of system. I think we should cut private health insurance out entirely - but that doesn't appear to be politically feasible at the moment... and if it's not that doesn't mean we should just do nothing... I think we have to get done what we can get done. This bill would save many thousands of lives. That's important. We're well past the point of doing what we should do... now we're at the pragmatic point of getting done what we can.
For those of you interested in how a health care reform bill comes out to over 2000 pages, this article provides some insight.
60 Minutes on CBS had another health care feature today. They concluded, once again, that there is so much waste in the present system, including the US government, that if the waste was removed there would be affordable health care for everyone in the USA.
Entropy. No system runs at 100% efficiency. Unfortunately, pretty much every last enterprise run by the government runs at a higher level(orders of magnitude) of inefficiency than those run in a competitive market by private concerns. There are, however, two upsides to having the government run it. 1) People who would normally be unfit for gainful employment almost anywhere else can now have a job and a pension (See TSA). 2) Nobody is getting rich by doing it(Save the Senators/Congress people who get the kickbacks and lobbying money for directing the contracts, and said contractors) It is exactly how our founding fathers envisioned it.
