How important having header tags like

on your site to SEO? Some said its an old practice that doesn't work anymore. Can someone share their thoughts.

    thanks

Whoever said that is a liar. Headings DO have an impact on your search engine optimization efforts, especially since search engines use the structure of a Web page to help determine the meaning of the content on a page. If you use a heading in accordance with the HTML specification, and then toss in a related keyword or two (such as
Are the Chicago Cubs a 2008 World Series Contender Already?
for example) then the search engines will know that it's not only a heading, but that the keywords (in this case "Chicago Cubs" "World Series" will be contained within the content that follows, and that in turn they should pay more attention to them. (This is over-kill on the simplification, I know. For those who are looking to attack or discredit me, deal with it. Bonus points if you can do so as a mature adult.)

headers do matter because they tell us the main theme of our site or what the main page is all about.
They do tell that the text in header part is specially focussed upon
