On my site I can set up different header tags for the following, as set up by the site designer.

    Header Tags Category Title
    Header Tags Category Description
    Header Tags Category Keywords
    Header Tags Categories Description

Is there any rule of thumb as to number of words etc to put in each category and any major "Not to do" that I should be aware

    of.

    Thanks in advance.

Are you referring to meta tags? Header tags are generally considered h1, h2, h3, h4, etc. Meta tags generally consist of title, description, keywords, etc. If you are targeting meta tags then stay under 70 characters for the title. Try to stay under 200 for the meta description, and try to keep to 5 keywords for meta keywords.

    hi Ovlznvvz,

i do agree with sometimesare. but i would like to recommend that it's better to keep your webpage description to 170 words.

i would also like to add that google don't see the description in the website nowadays but they used to before.

but i would recommend you to place the an attractive description because it will appear in the SERPs which will help you to drive traffic to your website because many people look at the description and click on the link (a quick tip on seo and how you can drive traffic to your website). :)

    Title: Max 70 characters
    Keyword: Max 10
    Description: Max 156 characters
Make your description what you would like your reader and search engine to read. :)

It should be short and exact keyword you are promoting. Longer you go lesser crawl.
