My website Colorado Running is going to get a new header. Now, I know little about website design, currently my header is 790px (width) and at the time I read that you shouldn't go wider than that because of some people using small monitors, etc. So does that still hold true or can I go wider and be ok? Thanks
It's really up to you. If you want your website to accommodate those on a small monitor, then I suggest you keep it the way it is or going with a fluid width. My personal website, I didn't make fit 800x600 resoltuions, only 1024 and up. If you are wanting everybody to be able to view your site with no problems what-so-ever, I highly suggest a fluid width layout. Percentages allow your layout to adjust to the width of each individuals screen resolution. It will even be easily viewable by those on cell phones or gaming consoles like the PS3.
790px is no good for big monitor either. See the current display resolution statistics: w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp You can use 950px-960px width, and header 130px-140px height.
People think that bigger is better as monitor resolution improves. The thing is, no one want a browser screen to take up their entire screen. I usually multi task and have many things going on. I prefer 800px wide, even though my monitor can handle much bigger resolutions
i agree with the 960 width i mean its time to push for future technology if your moniter has 800x600 or w.e, it's time for a new moniter. lol.
its not about technology, its about brwoser window not taking entire space of the screen of monitor.. and that way i agree, the max width for the header should eb around 800.
The latest stats show that major users nowadays use 1024px screens, so I would say 900-1000px (considering some empty space for the scrollbar) wide layouts would just fit fine.
The most common monitor rez is 1024 wide, subtract the scroll bar, and come to about 900 or 960 pixels and youre good to go
Don't go for fluid layout. As Graphic and Web Designer I have a wide screen monitor. Beleive me, websites look awful when they are stretched from one side to another and it's hard to see any layout at all.
As you can see here: w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp Most of the user still use 1024x768 and up so width should be 1000px and less. Make it look good with this resolution and then check others.
just follow "big brands"... if yahoo, cnet etc. websites are optimized for min. resolution of 1024x768, then you shouldn't worry... so, 1000px or less is fine
