I went to Chico State and I'm still relatively active with my fraternity. Things have calmed down exponentially since I went there - party-wise definitely, but also on the hazing side of the street. Fraternities just don't do the things they used to because there's too much trouble coming from all directions - the school, the national fraternity, angry parents, cops, etc. On the one hand, I look back fondly on the "good old days", but I definitely see good things coming out of the new generation.

Anyhow... At Chico, there was this un-sponsored un-recognized fraternity at the nearby community college that caused all the greeks a world of hurt by killing one of their pledges. Apparently, they were forcing their pledges to drink too much water while exercising in the basement during hell week. I didn't actually know you could die from drinking too much water, but apparently you can.

To make things worse, they had members that weren't even attending school. The cops arrested and charged four of the actives with involuntary manslaughter and hazing - which is a relatively benign thing to be convicted of - maximum of four years in prison, but you could also just walk away with probation. These guys got smart and got a lawyer who attempted to get the charges dismissed. Guess what? The judge reviewed the facts of the case, stated "U.S. soldiers were charged with torturing Iraqi prisoners for doing far less than what happened in that basement" - and not only did not dismiss the case, he upped the charges to include torture - which potentially carries a life sentence.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of this case. Probably not too many active greeks in this forum, but if there are any BE VERY VERY CAREFUL NOT TO KILL YOUR PLEDGES.
