There are tons of SE script online. And I know that people where trying to cash in on creating their own Google/Youtube clone sites.

Did anyone here every tried to create their on search engine to get a "piece of the pie"? Was it semi successful or did it tank out completely? Why?

It would likely be quite difficult to do well with a search engine based on an existing script. You would have to find a way to offer something unique that the other search engines don't offer. It is probably not worth the effort to try to market a new search engine unless it had something extra.

Trying to beat Google starting fresh is a giant task - Google have had 10 years to make theirs successful, by the time anyone reaches that, they'll have already made new initiatives that will make them even more successful.

Have anyone of you even tried or are you just stating what others have said before you? It can't be done. It's impossible. I believe if the right person comes along and truly understood Google's master plan, they could put a dent in Google's whole operation.

You know I use to always hear that nothing would ever come close to Myspace. That it was untouchable, until Facebook came along. All I'm saying is maybe it's time to step away from the crowd, and try to do the impossible. You never know, you may be surprised with the results.

On an off note, If Google banned your site tommorrow, would your site die because of it?

If you want to spend your time creating any project that might become successful as Google, you should have a UNIQUE idea in the first place...

Who said unique ideas make the money? That's false.
It's whoever better markets and promotes the idea.

I've cloned other peoples unique ideas before and gotten my websites featured in magazines. You don't need a unique idea, you need to figure out how to sell it to the right audience.

I agree with you on that, but you still need something unique to get them to stick around.

Search engines are inherently difficult and resource heavy to create. If you want to have any chance at competing you need to be an expert in the field, something your average DP member is most definitly not.

End of subject. I haven't even heard the word in 30 days or so. there was quite the buzz, but i was never impressed with it. Google changes with the times, and I like that. Plus, they have some of the most talented people in the world working for them because it's a "dream job". They take great care of their employees.

Personally don't bother. I mean, don't try and take the big boys on directly, this is why things such as niches exist.
