I've been using AMD since I can remember but recently I noticed that AMD released their Athlon II and Phenom II.
Have you tried these processors and what's the main difference between them?
As far as I know, Athlon II and Phenom II are working on AM3 socket with DD3 memory but are they compatible with old AM2 or AM2+ ?

The AMD processors are known for their working capabilities but on the other hand get heated up really fast...I have used AMD Athelon 3200+ and it' get heated up in like 30 minutes or so....Go for Intel...

Well I have Athlon 5000+ and it has been working for 5 hours and its temperature is comfortable 49 degrees. Maybe you're having some cooling issues there.
I would like to purchase Intel, but I can't afford i5 and socket is not compatible with core 2 duo, so I don't go for it.

i currently own 3 Athlons - all 4400+ @2.2Ghz , they are really great processors, combined with the Gigabyte motherboards normal working temp is ~28-32C, Max 42C @ 100% Load, motherboard can save 10 and even more degrees, depending on its design, i remember using Asus motherboard with my Athlon and it goes about 55C @ 100% Load lol
for that athlons the max temp is ~72C, but alot motherboards have switch for shutdown @ 60-65C

and 1 Phenom II @ 2.2Ghz, it is really faster for alot of things than the Athlon , better for gaming, DDR3 memory is better :)
and ill say go for AMD Phenom. Intel don't don't have that performance for that price :p

I also have Asus motherboard and it's giving me nothing but trouble. Eventually I had to lower the CPU voltage to get it working decently and get the temperature <50 C.
Anyway I'm planning to purchase Gigabyte cause I'm really fed up with Asus.
I would like to purchase Phenom II but it's 150$ here, so I'm wondering can Athlon II fit in AM3 socket as well? It probably can but I just want to make sure.

My Athlon works almost all the time at 70C without any problem. I run multiple tasks in the same time so it's loaded 80-90% all the time. Comparing prices and quality, go for AMD
