It's just been confirmed that the virulent H5N1 strain of avian influenza is in the UK. It's not certain if it's the same form that caused human deaths in the far east. The current train of thought is that a wild bird crept into the turkey farm and left infected droppings behind, contradicting Bernard Matthews' claims of high biosecurity. It's unlikely this will be an isolated case, so DEFRA are urging extra vigilance and have imposed restrictions on the farm. In the meantime, in true Wallace and Gromitt fashion, keep an eye out for this chicken.
