I just grabed a book and practized. I had a few friends, some more advanced I could ask for help when I was stuck. That keeps the frustration level low, especially in the beginning, when there is a minor bug somewhere and you can't find it for ages.

A school might be able to teach you the basics but the standards change so fast, as well as your ambitions, you will learn something new every day.

learning html in school isnt recommended as the students are often better than the teacher. also that teachers teach what they know, not what we should know
at least it is so in sweden.

If you're highly motivated, then you can definitely learn without having to go to
"school". I, myself, taught myself HTML from books and sites on the net. And
there are great forums such as this one, if you ever get stuck and need help.

If you easily get side-tracked, a proper course with someone "looking over your
shoulders" may be the way to go. Some people need that "authority" figure
to make them more accountable and thus "schools" ;-)

That said, you can definitely learn on your own. Get 2 or 3 GOOD reference
    books and practice ... lots.

Look at good code, play with it, break it — set goals and have fun!

I've learned everything by myself. Schools never teach up-to-date web design, in my opinion.

I did the same as pretty much everyone else here, learnt myself from the internet, I have been coding for a couple of years now and the first book I brought was about 3 weeks ago, so even books aren't that important. After all where better to learn about the internet than the internet it self. One site which I found to be particularly useful was w3 schools, they have loads of tutorials and references in various languages

I learned all I needed to from these videos at the address below. It is like going to school but on my own time. I have learned web design, blog building, getting traffic to site and lots of other stuff. Still have not gotten all the way through them. There are over 300 videos plus some other programs like a program to put audio and videos on my site.

Didn't know there were HTML lessons at school these days...
    I learn by myself.
Basic, Pascal, Java, HTML, PHP, etc...
As someone said, you need 10 hours to master HTML, and probably not even that. All that stuff is so easy...
