I've been building links in a haphazard way till now and it doesn't help for obvious reasons - you don't know how much you're spending, you might build 50 links one day and none for the rest of the month and worst of all you don't know what you're doing. I believe a goal is important to measure progress and success so there needs to be a more structured approach to link building and content creation. I'd like to know whether you guys do your link building on an ad-hoc basis or whether you have some planning in place? How would you go about planning your link building? Any suggestions?
The best plan is like this: just find 1 big site and convince him to add your link to his site. And in 3 months you'll get really good PR.
I think you should keep track of all your keywords separately. There are turning points in the google search results that you should follow. It is upon my observations and researches. For example the two most important positions are 3 and 10. Which means that the difference between top3 and all others is major. People usually find what they need in the top 3 results but if not then it is very possible they check everything what is on page 1. The next turning point is 10 as it separates first from second page. So there is not a big difference whether your site is on a position between 6 and 10 or between 13 and 18 but the difference between 10 and 11 is big as most of the people renew their searches instead of going to page 2. There are much more factors in the whole formula like sub-turning points, keyword search volume .. but lets don't get so deep inside. If you are on 20+th position for any of your keywords then you should work on the terms you consider as most important. I am working on statistics recently and the model described above is the most effective for me. I am not considering pages 3,4,5... here as minimal percentage of the people go there. I hope you find this info helpful.
That's very good advice DoOoM, thanks I'll keep that in mind. However the purpose of my thread was how to plan the link building? Should i have set days for article submission etc, should i create an excel file to see how things are going? Let me know your thoughts please...
How about this link building strategy: find 20 websites that rank well in the serps, google them, and add your link to every place you find that will accept your link too. You would be amazed how many quality links you can get to your site this way.
that's not the best plan. you should tap all your links into a spreadsheet, paid and unpaid. it seems a big task but is worth it * * i do not practice this. i'm disorganised! lol
I don't know the best way to start. But I try myself with my adult video site on some way I know. I submit it to adult directory, and enter the linkexchange program link teralinks.com. This way can get visitor for me, and I search Link:mysite.com it show >200 site link to me. Anyone had promoted adult site can give me some advice about building link for adult. I want to know more.
I am currently working on a combined link building and review service. The idea is simple: You ask fellow webmasters to give you feedback concerning your site (e.g. to find flaws or make suggestions) and after doing three reviews can ask for feedback yourself. Link building rides piggyback on the review as review requests can be grouped by categories and may carry link excahnge negotiation info. Have a look: http://review.onyxbits.de
I just build links to whatever interesting content I find on my forum, and then large scale building to the main URL's
The main thing is to vary you anchor text and get have a "full link spectrum" is what I call it. Site Wide, Static Links/In Context, Blog Posts, Blog Commenting, Directory Links, Article Directory, Deep Links to all pages and a bunch from various free sources (I am not going to list them). This way you cover all your bases, and if/when algo's change your coverd.

I completely agree with Zingo...variety is the keyword here...in both senses: anchor texts and the source of the links...
I dont know why people always thing PR is the most important. It can be everything, but can also be nothing... But a good video on youtube and you get thousands of backlinks for free!
I think this is the best strategy; however, I would like to hear an expert give out there detailed link building plan. Where to start? how many links per day? What sites to get links from? Outsource? etc.?
