I know many of us are webmaster so we are familiar with hosting. But have you ever thought about set up your own server from scratch? I have just done by making my PC become server. I create home server. It is very interested in. Share your experience if you've ever before
I've created a File Server, nothing more nothing less. Home servers generally suck unless you can magically pull in a bunch of lines and become the basement DC
I have also set-up File Server in my PC. Using dynamic Ip service to let my friend can access my FTP server. It takes me a half of day so my friend can access my ftp. The problems is from FileZilla server, from NAT configuration, from firewall ... At that time, i am so crazy.
I tried creating a server and it is a private server of ragnarok. I've created it for a test to see if some one can connect from it and not to pirate ragnarok. I created it just for my curiosity. I run it for just a day to see if my friends can connect to it. Luckily they do.
I would love to set up a private server running from home and I don't mind spending money for it as long as it is doable. I just don't know where to begin, anyone can point me to material that tells you how to do it from scratch?
i would like to build a computer and turn it into a server one day with the parts i plan to get, but once i have the money to do it, or i have a good job then im going to buy the parts from newegg since i was told by someone *coughs* stroh.
Yeah! Hi-Speed Connection along with Supportive System Configuration enable to run your own server freely
No i haven't yet done that. But to build the server it will take lots of money.Correct me if I am wrong.
I did this about a year ago; I started with buying a cheap motherboard and gradually bougth parts until I had a server-type machine. I hooked it up to the internet, bougth a nice domain and started doing some coding. Suddenly NavHost.com was born. I say go for it, it is a pretty rich experience.
You would need a high speed internet connection with 99.9% uptime reliability for a personal server to be feasible...and mommy's DSL line doesn't count
I've created several servers over the years. I hate setting up windows servers. Linux servers are actually a lot of fun to setup and play with, so many options and things you can do with them. My next project is to actually try using the Linux From Scratch distribution to build my own linux distribution completely.
I run a couple of different servers at home and a half a dozen at work, so yes, you could say that I have set up a few servers. My home servers are for e-mail and file serving, I do not have a web server at home as I do not have the bandwidth for it. Occassionally I will run a Ventrilo server or game server. At the office I have an Exchange server, a couple of web servers, a sharepoint server, a couple of file servers, and a few miscellaneous others for development.
I have tried to turn my PC into a server. All the software installation runs good on my PC but only problems remains is a decent connection.
I think most of the webmaster need to create a local server environment to test their website. When done, they upload the files to server. Only few automatic blogs/cms like wordpress doesn't need test at local at all. For me, I have test windows IIS server and WAMP environment server. They are almost the server environment, the only thing lacked is DNS resolution to my DSL cable , dynamic IP . Also the bandwidth at home is always not enough.
I will never take a chance with my own server because of the power situation and the speed of the net connection available in my country...
