When I decided to host my own website, I turn my computer into a Linux Server. There is only one problem... I don't remember how I heard of Linux and why I got that distro of Linux (Fedora Core 5) I decided to get Fedora Core the day Fedora Core 5 came out. I also upgraded my server the same day that Fedora Core 6 came out. Both of these without planning it! Anyway... I tell this to people and someone people eve's drop and say "What is Linux?". So this is where the poll is coming from... Have you heard of Linux before and have you tried it?
I have never tried linux before never knew it exsisted until a few years ago lol. They have a cute logo though
I tried to install Ubuntu on my LT but it gave me fits trying to install the dang thing! Never got it to go
I tried working with Mandrake Linux about three years ago, but didn't feel it was ready for prime time. I am NOT a command line kind of person and just was not ready to make the commitment it was obviously going to take. I have been thinking it is probably time to revisit the situation and see how far things have come along because I see lots of interesting linux based applications coming from outside the USA. I sometimes wonder if the USA is setting itself up for failure in the future because we are the only ones who can afford to be hooked on Windows When the tide turns we will be behind. I have an incentive to try again. A new laptop I purchased in January ran fine for almost three months on Windows XP Home; then it locked up hard with a WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) error. There was no warning and no recovery. We fooled around with it for a week, but finally decided to return it. Costco was nice enough to give us the money back without any hassle.
I've used Ubuntu in emergency situations a few times when XP wouldn't boot. It's kinda nice, but I just can't see myself using it all the time.
Linux are quite good in terms of applications but in terms of multimedia i prefer to use windows... I just love the packaging of Linux. Im just having a hard time installing it... more complicated than windows....
I installed Fedora Core 2 couple of weeks back but when I try to login with the username and password given at the time of installation, it keeps on saying "Wrong password" And I am too lazy to format it again lol Linux is quite good though.
Unix / Linux is unavoidable and the only sensible (imho) option for server software, on the desktop it's only really for techie's....
I have heard Linux and used Redhat Linux in my college when I had project on it. Than after I never used it.
I tryed first time Red Hat and even use it 1 month only withowt windowz but since my work is done bether in Win bi use win Olso i used Slacware And Suse as live cd I plan to use only linux in the future (when i found solutions for the softs i use on win) Linux is more stable and with the new versions has a great multimedia side and look
I don't have enough money to buy my own computers, so I make them from scratch using spare parts of friends old computers. Windows takes up to much resources for my dinky little machines, so that is what started me on linux. Now I have become kind of an anti Microsoft guy. I would like to get a Mac one day if I could afford it though.
Being able to do more with less is always a good thing. I think that in 10? 20? years you may look back and see that not being able to afford anything better was a blessing in disguise
I have started using Linux since i was in collage.. Been working on Linux..for long, and id say its the most stable OS and most trusted one when it comes to Security, Web hosting, Mail server... and many more.. And for those of whom don't know about Linux.. Its the future.
I have one of those free Ubuntu CDs that you can get from their website. Linux is okay, but I prefer Windows Vista. I don't have it installed, but when I want to use it I just put in the CD and run it off that.
